About
I AR YOU takes its name from the cryptic script across the top of a 1988 painting of a haunting, shrouded figure by the black Mississippi native, Mary T Smith, who created it just three years before she stopped painting aged 84. Smith, like most in this show came to art late in life, and in retirement discovered a talent for depiction that blazes with intensity and strangeness.
The exhibition also includes early mud paintings on wood by Jimmie Lee Sudduth, ceramic face jugs by Jerry Brown, celebrity paintings by Painter Chuckie and the literally bullet-riddled figures of William Burroughs.
