Hayley Newman, Domestique, 2010-13

Chaired by Bridget Crone

To coincide with their two person exhibition, Castlefield Gallery is pleased to host a panel discussion between Hayley Newman and Emily Speed chaired by independent curator Bridget Crone/ Plenty Projects.

Both artists work explores the relationship between the body and architecture. Using an eclectic range of media from sculpture and video to performance and writing, their work can be seen to continue a tradition in female performance and sculpture that explores physical limitations and mental or emotional trajectories, orchestrating narratives that play with the precariousness of the body’s relationship to one’s environment.

PLENTY PROJECTS is the organisational structure of Bridget Crone – a curator with 15 years experience working in the UK, Australia and internationally, Crones’s practice is typified by the commissioning of new work from artists working in an expanded way across performance, film and video, and sound – examples of which include the 2008 commissioning and production of Brutalist Premolition by Gail Pickering which was shown at the ICA, London and Arnolfini, Bristol. Bridget’s ongoing interest in staging and the theatrical has been explored through two programmes – The Sensible Stage (2007-8, various venues including the Whitechapel Gallery, London; Holburne Museum, Bath) and A Theatre to Address (2010, Arnolfini, Bristol). Crone currently convenes the monthly experimental film and discussion programme, The Film Exercise, at the Arnolfini, Bristol.
