About

The Photographers' Gallery presentsthe first UK exhibition of the influential Brazilian artist Geraldo de Barros (Sà £o Paulo, 1923-98). An accomplished painter, photographer and industrial designer, de Barros is regarded as a pioneer of Modernist photography and an inspirational figure for a new generation of contemporary Brazilian practitioners. What Remains will be a survey show of de Barros' photographic oeuvre, focusing on the series Sobras (1996 - 98), made towards the end of his life, in relation to a selection of his celebrated Fotoformas series (1946 - 51). The exhibition will examine these two intense periods of experimentation that form de Barros' only engagement with photography. Marking the beginning and conclusion of his career, the two series are brought together to demonstrate the artist's sustained radical approach to the image while exploring the formal and philosophical layers of his practice. The exhibition is curated by Isobel Whitelegg, an expert on modern and contemporary art in Brazil, and Karen McQuaid, Curator, The Photographers' Gallery.
