How did artists react in the run up to war and how did their practices shift in relation to unfolding events? To what extent have institutions been receptive to artistic interventions in the contested political terrains opened by invasion and occupation? How have things changed with the end of formal occupation but in conditions of enduring crisis and continuing violence? Amid the violence, trauma and ruin of war, how might art practice might express resistance, hope or resilience and speak to dreams of peace?

Art, War and Peace: Responses to the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq is organised by Dr Alan Ingram (UCL) and Yousif Naser (The Ark Artist Space). The event draws on research conducted by Alan Ingram at UCL Department of Geography and funded by the British Academy and is supported by UCL’s Public Engagement programme. The event also forms part of Reel Iraq 2013, a celebration of the arts and culture of Iraq. http://responsestoiraq.wordpress.com
