Symposium: seriousness & humour in art writing

About

The symposium will consider a number of topics in relation to seriousness and humour within art writing: why is seriousness the dominant register of choice within art writing? What are the alternatives to seriousness? Why is non-serious art writing necessary? How do we attribute value outside of serious culture? What are the implications of using humour within art writing? David Burrows is an artist and writer interested in notions and concepts of the new in sacred, mass and avant-garde cultures. He collaborates with Simon O'Sullivan in the ‘performance-fiction' Plastique Fantastique and is currently Head of Undergraduate Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Art. Gavin Butt is Reader in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. His books include Performing/Knowing (2011), Between You and Me: Queer Disclosures in the New York Art World 1948-1963 (2005) and After Criticism: New Responses to Art and Performance (2004). Andrew Hunt is Director of the Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea. He was previously curator of International Project Space, Birmingham and is currently one on the judges for the 2012 Turner Prize. Hooky Street Press is a new writing project co-ordinated by Chris Poolman exploring the value and use of humour within art-writing. www.hookystreetpress.com
