About

Three contemporary female photographers exploring ‘surface' image, Subtext: what might be inferred, the ‘something' that lies beneath. Three photographers present a variety of approaches to subtext. Ranging in subject from behavioural patterns and censorship, conflict, ambiguity and idealization of the body, to imagined and constructed interior spaces. Héloise Bergman's work explores the internal conflicts of inherited belief systems, versus today's media shaped society. Coral Howard's work, using the iconic Barbie Doll as her current ‘model', slips between feminist issues surrounding the ideal of the body feminine and the human fetishisation of the female. Kate Kotcheff is interested in ruin and she shows works from an installation entitled ‘Mother's Ruin'. She uses this ‘saying' to express a fragmentary space of ‘forgetting' which sits between the narrative forms of story-telling and a mise-en-scene of objects looking at time.
