Sarah Bowker-Jones and Sarah West met at Slade School of Art in 2006 when both were postgraduate students. Since then they have continued their independent practices whilst maintaining a dialogue about shared threads and concerns. These common connections form the basis of constructing this duo show, Temporary Surfaces. By assembling their works together, Bowker-Jones and West aim to promote both reactions and relationships; to open up their practices to greater interpretation; and to create an intriguing presence. Both artists explore and question the nature of temporary surfaces within their research, process and the work itself. This manifests in the transience of their ephemeral source materials through to the translation and handling of these sources into their actual works. Bowker-Jones' works are temporary sculptures with fragile surfaces, often site-specific, which metamorphose before, during and after their conception. West's paintings have a permanence, synonymous with their medium, but whose imperfect surfaces echo the reality of her subject matter and its vanity. http://www.temporarysurfaces.blogspot.co.uk
