Mary Yacoob: Works on Paper
About
Mary Yacoob's drawings and prints explore and re-imagine architecture and public art, creating proposals for alternative realities. Her works are systemic in nature, using rotation, repetition, line and geometry as triggers for ideas. In some works, Yacoob takes a photograph of a building and finds within it an internal logic from which she can extrapolate through the use of a visual language, for example, elevation plans or electrical circuit diagrams. In other works she proposes viewing a city via specific perspectives such as the circulation of planets or archival technology.
In her Doodle drawings, Yacoob repeatedly draws a letter of the alphabet or numeral whilst listening to music. When the verse of a song changes she changes the size of the letter drawn, and when someone on the radio talks she switches colour or letter. Playing with this combination of rules and chance, the drawing continues until a structure emerges.
