About

Standpoint is proud to present the first solo show by new American artist Annie Fehrenbacher. The show's title is taken from Steely Dan's song 'Peg'. The late-70's band was ubiquitous with the notion of ‘effecting the ineffable', attempting to create lyrical systems for the abstract.à‚  Putting lyrics to pop-jazz scores, they attempted to literalize the genre with a contemporary narrative and constitution (which, by definition, is relatively self-defeating). Coming from a place of no formal cultural past, Fehrenbacher's work confronts similarly contradictory issues of ‘naming' within contemporary culture.à‚  A Los Angeles native, her work employs structures that tangentially reflect her association to this 'non-place' as an artist.à‚  Fehrenbacher's absorption with notions of the West, whether historicized or romanticized, runs parallel to a cultural displacement, visible in her new work's antithetical materiality. Fehrenbacher's parents were antique dealers and collectors: her father a collector and dealer of Native American artifacts.à‚  Growing up in a home filled with collectibles and objects whose histories she latently took on as her own, Fehrenbacher retains a fascination with identities heralded in ideas of presentation, display and the sacrosanct.à‚
