About

Contemporary Art from Sri Lanka 2011 will be the first international showcase of Sri Lanka's leading contemporary artists since the end of the county's most prominent artists working today. As the first of its kind in the UK, the exhibition will present approximately 25 diverse examples of Sri Lankan artwork. Contemporary Sri Lankan art is set against a complex cultural history. In the modern era, popular acclaim has largely rested on artwork and movements of the last century such as the highly renowned and influential 43 Group. This is partly due to scant criticism, literature and exhibition of Sri Lanka's creative output. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka has a radical and energetic contemporary art scene, which will be traced in this timely exhibition. Participatind artists include established figures in Sri Lanka such as Muhanned Cader, Druvinka, Kingsley Gunatillake, Sanjeewa Kumara, Saskia Pintelon, Jagath Ravindra, Tilak Samarawickrema, Chandraguptha Thenewara, Jagath Weerasingbe and Anoma Wijewarde, alongside prolific emerging artists Vajira Gunewarda, Dumith Kulasekara, Sujeewa Kumari, Prageeth Monohansa and Pala Pothupitiye. The educational evening event on 10th March will address the current direction of Sri Lankan contemporary art. This exciting and rare opportunity will consist of a panel discussion and debate with at least one exhibiting artist, curators and experts in the field. Tickets can be purchased through Asia House (enquiries@asiahouse.co.uk).
