Monagambéee (1969)
Sambizanga (1972)

A screening of films by Sarah Maldoror, a pioneering French filmmaker of Guadeloupean origin whose films are closely linked to the liberation struggles in lusophone Africa. Adapted from Le Complet de Mateus, a novel by Angolan writer Luandino Vieira, Monagambéee (1969) captures the interrogation of a militant that soon turns into torture. Sambizanga (1972) revolves around the figure of Maria, a woman in search of her militant husband who has been arrested by the Portuguese army.

Followed by a Q&A with director Sarah Maldoror, moderated by artist Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc.

Location: Institut Français Ciné Lumière, 17 Queensberry Place, London SW7 2DT
