The Serpentine Gallery presents an exhibition of the celebrated American artist Nancy Spero, the first major presentation following her death in autumn 2009.

Spero?s radical body of work explores issues of subjugation, brutality and the abuse of power. Nancy Spero Artaud Painting: Then there will be? 1969 Courtesy of the Estate of Nancy Spero and Galerie Lelong Active in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s, Spero drew upon a broad range of visual sources, including Etruscan and Roman frescos, mythology, fashion magazines and feminist history. Richly layered and powerfully executed, her signature scroll paintings, paper works and wall hangings present compelling arguments for tolerance, equality and a non-hierarchical society.

Nancy Spero has been initiated by the Centre Pompidou, Paris, (presented from 13 October 2010 to 10 January 2011), and adapted for the Serpentine Gallery.
