Nikolai Dvigubsky In Pictures

About

Nikolai Dvigubsky (1936 — 2008) was born in Paris to Russian parents who had fled their native country after the revolution. Nikolai Dvigubsky was Russian by birth, but fundamentally French when it came to his academic background and friends. His whole life has been marked by two cultures, Russian and French, which have had a complementary influence on his work. Having studied at the Academie Paul Colin between 1952 and 1956, he left deeply influenced by his mentor, and by the widespread cosmopolitan ambiance of the time. Some years later he moved to USSR and commenced studies at the then prestigious Academy of the Cinema of the USSR. There he forged strong bonds of friendship and artistic collaboration with the new wave of Soviet directors, including Andrei Konchalovsky and Andrei Tarkovsky, with whom he worked for many years. Alongside his theatre and film work, he pursued his career as an artist, and his paintings can be seen in museums in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Tbilisi. On return to France, he met with Tarkovsky again and the two collaborated on the production of Boris Godunov at Covent Garden. He also worked with Konchalovsky on Eugene Onegin at La Scala in Milan. And it was with Andrzej Zulawski that Nikolai Dvigubsky worked on production of Boris Godunov again, this time for the big screen. For the last 30 years of his life, Nikolai Dvigubsky lived in Normandy, France, devoting himself mainly to painting.
