Leaves of Grass

About

An exhibition reflecting on the ephemeral of burial in Ancient Egypt. Sherry Doyal's framed botanic works draw on the flower garlands and leaves and the basket coffins of coiuled flowers found with mummies in Egyptian tombs. Doyal was first inspired by the beds of Osiris at the Cairo Museum — life size wooden frames in outline of the god, planted with grass, which grows to 10 inches in height — symbols of the change from the inert seed to the living. These works powerfully respond to the fragility of life/death and reflect the artist's own journey in breast cancer recovery. The exhibit is scheduled for breast cancer awareness month, October: proceeds are to go to the National Cancer Institute Cairo http://www.nci.edu.eg/ Sherry Doyal is a basket maker, teacher and conservator of botanical material objects including museum and historic house collections of baskets, furniture, economic botany, ethno botanicals and herbaria.
