Surface Dwellers Exhibition

This month, Surface Gallery presents its first in house exhibition of 2010: Surface Dwellers, an impromptu group exhibition showcasing the work of our many surface inhabitants. The exhibition seeks to bring together artists from the recently opened studios and our team of devoted gallery volunteers. It will document a diverse range of activity, from works created within the gallery walls to works conceived beyond them. The exhibition explores notions of ‘encounter' and ‘participation,' as well as the idea of a 'site' or 'dwelling.' The launch of our studios opens up an exciting new space for our organisation, which we wish to share and celebrate with the public. Our studio artists are brought together by the need to inhabit a space for creative production, our volunteers in turn are motivated by a desire to challenge themselves and to share their passion for art. Both parties share an objective will to participate in culture outside of direct economic benefit, a conception that lies at the heart of visual arts. These objectives lead to an organisation like Surface Gallery, a space which caters to this activity. Volunteer run, volunteer led, it generates the exchange of thoughts and ideas, and promotes opportunities. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and a diverse range interests; our accountant could be a performance artist, press officer an abstract painter or our funding coordinator a physicist. Surface Dwellers ultimately seeks to celebrate and reward our inhabitant's constant commitment to the cultural activity in this gallery.
