About

The Gathering: building the Arts Council Collection 1979-2009 uncovers some of the complex processes that have led to key works entering the Arts Council Collection over the past forty years. Bringing back the voices of the artists and selectors involved, the exhibition reveals how and why particular works came be to acquired. The exhibition will include highlights from recent years, with painting, sculpture and video by Gilbert and George, Mark Wallinger, Rebecca Warren, Tony Cragg, Peter Doig and Martin Creed, and spectacular installations by John Frankland and David Batchelor. The Gathering is the result of the first curatorial competition for post-graduate students run by the Arts Council Collection in 2008. The competition, called Select.ac, offers the opportunity to curate an exhibition drawn from the Collection, and the first winner is Robert Dingle, from the MFA Curating course at Goldsmiths College in London.
