Rules and Regs - Live Art Residencies @ South Hill Park

About

Three artists, Katherina Radeva, Tom Marshman and Mary Oliver, create new live art work in response to rules devised by curator Outi Remes as a challenge to explore new ways of working. The artists will be based in the Bracknell Gallery which will be open to the public during the residency, offering a unique opportunity to view the entire process of creating new live art. Come with an open mind and engage with the artists. Gallery opening hours: Thurs-Sat: 1pm-9.30pm Closed Mon-Weds Mary Oliver abandoned painting in favour of video when the canvas wouldn't talk back to her. Conversation has become of prime importance and for the last decade she has focused on dialogues between actual and ‘other' kinds of performers. Her dark comedic works have used the meeting point of the real and the recorded to explore such grand narratives as the tyranny of media perfection interplayed with real body issues. In these stories of home, food and the unstoppable passing of time she attempts to draw our attention to the humour and the wonder that can be found in the everyday things of life. Mary is Reader in Performance at the University of Salford. Katherina Radeva uses still-images, objects and a narrative thread conveyed through speech and movement. She combines her personal experiences with universal signs and symbols. Simple presentations become metaphoric, enabling the artist to act within the cultural present-day whilst remembering the past. For over ten years, Tom Marshman has produced projects in a wide range of medium including performance, photography, installation, publication and film. Tom encourages a dialogue with audiences and participants aiming to create a safe space to share their thoughts and experiences. The results give very evocative authentic glimpses into everyday things. Tom is an Arnolfini associate artist. The residencies culminate in public performances on 16th (6.30pm) and 17th (2pm) October 2009. Admission is free, but booking is required: exhibitions.intern@southhillpark.org.uk Rules and Regs is supported by Arts Council England.
