Pilar Corrias Gallery is delighted to present ‘It's fine as long as you draw but don't film' (Waltz with Bashir, 2008): An Exhibition of Drawings. Directed by Ari Folman, the Golden Globe Award wining, feature-length animation Waltz with Bashir (2008) explores Folman's personal participation as part of the Israeli army in the Lebanon War of 1982. Unable to recall key parts of his actions during the war, Folman interviewed other former soldiers to piece together his memory of his involvement. Constructed of some two thousand illustrations, Waltz with Bashir employs drawing as a means of reconstructing memory. ‘Whenever I imagined the film it was drawn it was illustrated, it was animated,' Folman explains. Taking the power of drawing as a point of departure, ‘It's fine as long as you draw but don't film' presents original drawings by the film's super designer, Israeli illustrator David Polonsky alongside existing drawings by Honoré Daumier, William Hogarth and Carol Rama, and new works by artists Francis Alÿs; Charles Avery; Miquel Barceló; Keren Cytter; Douglas Gordon; Tala Madani; Ernesto Neto; Philippe Parreno; Shahzia Sikander, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. Philippe Parreno will present a series of black and white cartoon-like vignettes exploring the strength of imagery as a primary means of communication. Douglas Gordon will show a series of fourteen new drawings based on the seven plagues announced by the seven angels in The Book of Revelation, the last book of the New Testament. The exhibition will also include seven new sound recordings by Rirkrit Tiravanija documenting the process of making a series of drawings of recent protests.
