Memento - a newly commissioned installation by Ed Pien
About
Ed Pien is a Toronto based artist interested in belief systems and the supernatural. During his Breathe residency at Chinese Arts Centre in summer 2008 he conducted workshops with immigrants in Manchester, the results of which together with his own research into the social, cultural and political issues surrounding immigration, form the basis of Memento.Memento, a newly commissioned ethereal walk-through installation, explores notions of belonging and the many meanings of the word 'ghost'. It will transform the gallery into a haunting environment combining light, intricate paper-cuts, reflector film, video and sound.
Ed Pien was born in Taiwan and moved to Canada aged 11. He received a BA in Fine Art from the University of Ontario and MA Fine Art from University of York. Pien has exhibited internationally including at the Drawing Centre, New York; La Biennale de Montreal; Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City.
