About
Vanitas form of still life painting practiced in the Netherlands during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The paintings, which often featuring skulls, watches and rotting fruit, aimed to serve as a reminder of the transience of our earthly life.
Sculptor, Matthew Sibley has used this theme as a starting point for a series of brutal and expressive figure sculptures to be shown in the courtyard at 20-21. The sculptures are strongly influenced by his own collection of African artefacts along with his interests in poetry, Greek mythology
