This July sees the return of Surface Gallery's studio artists in their annual exhibition.
Nine is a collaboration between current and previous artists united by the home they have found at Surface. The collective have thrown open the studio doors to share the achievements of their professional practices.
Nine will showcase the diverse work and the breadth of talent of these accomplished artists. The collaborative exhibition features pieces in a variety of disciplines: painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media installation and sculptural tableau. Nine will display the range of activities the 2014 studio artists group are currently engaged in.
In 2013 the studio artists joined as Eight. Since then spaces have swapped hands and some of the artists have moved out of Surface Gallery’s studios and onto new projects. This year Nine will showcase the talents of some of the collective space’s newest occupants and display previously unseen works from those involved.
As Nottingham post wrote of last year’s Eight, “make a trip to Sneinton to see Surface Gallery… as this show proves, there is plenty of creative juice zipping around.”
Our Nine will build on the success of their previous exhibition and the tasters they gave us in their solo Le Loovre exhibitions. The show promises to be a wonderful visual celebration of the creative process and the exploration of artistic practices.
The exhibition will launch Friday 25th July, 6pm, with live music. To accompany the evenings musical entertainment, there will be refreshments, generously contributed by the artists themselves and a bar of local ales provided by Surface Gallery’s brewery sponsor, Springhead.
Paul Henegan, a resident studio artist and one of those exhibiting, is running a series of printmaking workshops to coincide with Nine. Paul’s workshops will take place throughout the day, Saturday August 2nd and will look at using paper, fabric, colour and layered printing as a means of responding to the exhibition.
Paul often explores print within his personal practices and has had plenty of hands on experience with the medium. He has been teaching for many years and has run several successful print workshops in the past, so come along, have some fun and produce some prints to take home.
