Exhibitions are open 11am – 6pm, except Thursday, 11am – 9pm.
The ICA is the first public institution to present a selected survey of recent work by Berlin-based artist and writer Hito Steyerl, recognising one of the most critically acclaimed artists working in the field of video today. Steyerl is a Berlin-based filmmaker and writer. Her work focuses on contemporary issues such as feminism, militarisation as well as the mass proliferation and dissemination of images and knowledge brought on by digital technologies. Steyerl also often infuses her work with personal narratives using found and new footage to create humorous, filmic collages that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, whilst other films take the form of interviews or performance lectures. In doing so, her work challenges and questions our own accepted sources of knowledge and information.
Steyerl currently teaches at the New Media Art at University of the Arts in Berlin. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tokyo, the University of Television and Film in Munich, and obtained a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Her work has been included in several exhibitions such as dOCUMENTA 12, Taipei Biennial 2010, and 7th Shanghai Biennial. She has published widely, including websites e-flux and eipcp, and has recently published The Wretched of the Screen (2012) with Sternberg Press. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of talks and screening events.
