For Thomas Hartmann, opposites are the key to painting, as they mean the confrontation of the self with the other. The tension between the whole and its (individual) parts is therefore at the centre of his work. A recurring core motif in his paintings and drawings is the relationship of the individual to the community. In the permanent metamorphosis of his work, which leads through a wide panorama of mysterious motif worlds, he has developed his very own signature. Thus, figures as well as landscapes, cities as well as nature can be found in his works.
