shirani bolle

With her bold, humorous viewpoint she puts it thus “I cannot help but see the ‘ underlying gross’ in most situations!” Shirani Bolle has been cultivating her family of “Global Hypermonsters” over the past few years and her artwork is deeply inspired by her family history as the daughter of an Auschwitz Holocaust survivor, juxtaposed with her love of painting in bright and beautiful optimistic colours, that she attributes to her Sri Lankan roots. Only painting on materials that happen to fall into her hands, that others might throw away such as cardboard or wood that she finds on the street, is a symbolic tribute to how the Jewish community expressed themselves within the concentration camps. Shirani explains, “They made something beautiful when they had absolutely nothing. I love the idea that even in the greatest horror there is always beauty.”
