Gerhard Hoehme is one of the most important representatives of German post-war art. While his art was initially strongly associated with gestural and informal painting, he soon sought new creative possibilities. Hoehme was preoccupied with the material qualities of his painting media. He layered clods of paint, which he scraped off old canvases, to create haptic space-occupying objects (Borkenbilder). In relation to the traditional format of the panel painting, Hoehme sought new freedom and independence: he regarded the painting as an open, energetic field that expands towards its surroundings. As a result, he developed irregularly contoured canvases - an early anticipation of the "shaped canvases". He was already working with plastic in the 1950s and is considered a pioneer in the use of polyethylene tubing in painting and sculpture. To this day, he stands out with his expansive paintings and string sculptures.
