I have been working with nineteenth and early twentieth century artefacts, such as textile jacquards, pianola rolls, musical box discs, and IBM punch cards. I often work directly with these discs and cards - using the metal polyphon discs as etching plates, the jacquards as stencils, and the IBM cards as collagraph plates. These redundant ancestors of the digital age can be valued as decorative objects, and I have explored these qualities, along with their original function as early forms of coding technology. More recently I have become interested in basic numbering and the way it seems to be used everywhere as a coding tool. Some of my images relate to the Cliff near where I live, which has British Mountaineering Council coded routes.
