Artists Statement I don't know how to love a place... Andrea has always felt displaced. Belonging nowhere she is a nomadic, an observer drawn to capturing snapshots of transitional locations through painting. Absorbed with notions of non place, place and interstice Andrea has considered the viewable environment and how that relates to Modernism, Geometry, Architecture, Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. Visualising physical and psychological spaces Andrea's work collectively connects yet there is a disconnect revealing a state of flux, crossing boundaries, discovering dead ends and places of transformation whilst moving between quantifiable and indeterminate states. Fluorescent marks are often used referencing hi-visibility, safety protection and these can disrupt the viewer’s visual perception. Pigments are applied, reimagined monotone objects are then interrupted by minimal bright colours combining figuration and abstraction. Using mixed media Andrea draws on both the linear architectural forms and random markings. She edits, re-edits, duplicates, interprets and re-interprets the literal context. Repetition is thematic alluding to the cyclical nature of life. Precision is implied, imperfections arise and impossible structures unravel with dystopian overtones. Andrea reflects psychologically to the everyday overlooked instant or object. She is drawn to the ephemeral, the splitsecond, a passage through a place or environment. Andrea is a rootless wanderer and wonderer, a 21st Century Flâneuse. Bio (Selected Shows) Andrea Coltman lives and works in Knockholt, Kent.
