“ I now have a room, as I’ve long been wishing...” - Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh lived at 87 Hackford Road in Stockwell, for a year between August 1873 and 1874. He fell in love with the British culture and was inspired by the art he saw in the UK.

The Van Gogh House London opens following a meticulous conservation project over the past six years. The house that had narrowly avoided bombing during the Blitz has been brought back to life with great care and sensitivity.

Adorned with a blue plaque commemorating Van Gogh’s brief but significant presence at the residence, 87 Hackford Road has become a cultural landmark, uniting an international community of enthusiasts, artists, and historians invested in celebrating Van Gogh’s remarkable career.

Today, the Van Gogh House curates a dynamic programme of events anchored in the artist’s practice, and local heritage. In addition to exhibitions, performances, and guided tours, the Van Gogh House hosts an artist residency programme in tandem with its nearby sister institution the San Mei Gallery.

We understand the house not as a time capsule of Van Gogh’s year in Brixton, but as a living restoration that remains dedicated to preserving Van Gogh’s legacy while supporting the next generation of artists, writers, filmmakers, and designers.
