Call for submission: ?The Whitechapel Gift Shop' (working title)
We are currently receiving proposals for the use of our shop front and premises.
About the location: 2A East Mount Street, E1
Just opposite Whitechapel tube, in the area famous for the Krays, the Ripper, the Elephant Man, an excellent curry, Whitechapel market and London's largest mosque, next to the Post Office, and the development site for the Royal London Hospital ? soon to be the largest hospital in Europe ? and directly above the new East London Line, en route to the Olympics in 2012, and in a private road, can be found this former sawmill (1880s), pottery (1990s) and theater / club space (2000s) currently being refurbished by Public Works Group and the owners.
The property consists of a large building to the back (approx. 8m high x 20m long) and a shop front and premises (approx. 8m long x 2m wide) at the front. The shop is currently unused, and forms a row with ?The Eatery' and ?The Urban Bar' on the corner of Whitechapel Road.
From October 2008, and prior to refurbishment commencing early 2009, the shop area will be made available to artists and performers. It will also be possible to use the main space for larger
installations / performances, depending on refurbishment when this gets going. Outside the venue, there is also a large 3 story exterior wall, the private road and return.
