The “Künstlerhaus,” owned by the Salzburger Kunstverein, houses exhibition areas (in total 500 m²) and 21 studios for artists and art initiatives. It is a place where current trends in contemporary international art are presented, where artists can meet and be met, and where art, art theory and cultural policies can be analysed and discussed.

Since 1992 the program has been elaborated and organised by the respective director (1992 Hildegund Amanshauser,1993-1995 Silvia Eiblmayr, 1996-2004 Hildegund Amanshauser, 2005-2013 Hemma Schmutz, since 2014 Séamus Kealy) and aims to meet international standards. By means of exhibitions, symposia, lectures, workshops or networking projects with other institutions the concept aspires to discover new forms of promoting art. In 2008 the Salzburger Kunstverein was rewarded with the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Award for its excellence in exhibition work and educational activity (together with Westfälischer Kunstverein Münster).

Great importance is given to the involvement of the local public and artists. The association has about 550 members, 350 of which are artists.
