PARK HYATT NEW YORK ANNOUNCES SOURCE: CODE AT THE AVENUE GALLERY

NEW YORK, New York (January 2018) – Park Hyatt New York is proud to debut the group exhibition, SOURCE: CODE, at the AVENUE Gallery on 5 February 2018. SOURCE: CODE draws inspiration from the wide-ranging ideas and formulas artists utilize in their artistic practice to create a work of art. The artists exhibited in SOURCE: CODE, explore ‘ideas’ as a medium in their practice. As a result, artworks are deeper, more conceptual and reward a second look. Running through 31 March 2018, SOURCE: CODE will present works of art by Josef Albers, Cory Arcangel, Tauba Auerbach, Anne-Lise Coste, Karl Haendel, Channa Horwitz, Sol Lewitt, Marco Maggi, Louise Nevelson, Laurel Sparks, Frank Stella, Jennifer West and Stan VanDerBeek.

In this exhibition, artists develop creative formulas to tackle the challenges of art making. These formulas, much like a math theorem or a scientific thesis, move the artist from point A to point B. Through repetition, a formula emerges full of creative power. The procedure becomes an identifiable characteristic to the artist’s works. Through both playful and serious experimentation, the artist develops an idiosyncratic language, just as a writer has a characteristic tone of voice and a musician has a distinguishable sound.

SOURCE: CODE shares works of art made by artists whose foundations in science, semiotics and visual thinking align most closely with conceptual art. But, these artists are also category-defying. Much like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, the works of art on view are visually coded with layers of meaning beneath the surface, enabling people to imagine and challenge their expectations.

“SOURCE: CODE is a thoughtful addition to Park Hyatt New York’s existing portfolio of art and our ever- expanding commitment to the arts,” stated Peter Roth, Area Vice President and General Manager, Park Hyatt New York. “We are thrilled to showcase works of art that combine experimentation and ideas in a novel light.”
