The Nederlands Fotomuseum is situated in the former Las Palmas warehouse on the Wilhelminapier, one of the most photogenic spots on the Maas river in Rotterdam. The museum provides a widely varying exhibition programme of work by major figures in photography as well as by young talent and amateurs. With the exceptional exhibition entitled De Donkere Kamer. Bijzondere verhalen uit de Nederlandse fotografie (The Darkroom. Extraordinary Tales from Dutch Photography), the Nederlands Fotomuseum is the only location in the Netherlands where a presentation on the history of Dutch photography is always on display.

In addition to viewing exhibitions, visitors to the museum can also listen to the stories behind photos, they can surf through the digital collection with its more than 100,000 photos, watch short films by photographers in the Film Lounge, and browse through the books in the extensive library. The museum organizes a challenging programme for young and old, with workshops, lectures and special guided tours.

The Fotomuseum administers more than 130 archives by Dutch photographers and, in doing so, can provide an overview of 100 years of Dutch photographic history, with major names such as Ed van der Elsken, Cas Oorthuys, Aart Klein and Frits Rotgans. The museum is further oriented to the acquisition of complete, influential Dutch photo projects, rather than to the purchase of separate photos as is normally the case. Examples of this include Hollandse Taferelen (Dutch Scenes) by Hans Aarsman, Oog om Oog (Eye for an Eye) by Sanne Sannes, and Honderd Zomers, Honderd Winters (Hundred Summers, Hundred Winters) by Bertien van Manen. The museum also collects short films on photography, which are shown in the Film Lounge. These are often by well-known photographers such as Anton Corbijn, Teun Hocks and Cornelie Tollens.
Prints of the most attractive photos in the museum collection can be purchased. The museum shop also offers a rich assortment of beautiful photo books, photos and cards. We will be delighted to see you in the Nederlands Fotomuseum!
