A little over 150 years, since the Museum der Kulturen Basel was opened. The collection was continuously expanded by private collectors and museum's expeditions. Today, the focus is on the preservation, study and communication of the collections. Today's Museum der Kulturen Basel goes back to its origins in the mid-19th century. In 1849 opened in Augustinergasse Museum of Basel also valuable ancient America stocks found place. This Basel possessed one of the first publicly accessible ethnographic collections in Europe. A highlight in the museum's history was the visit of the Dalai Lama in May 2001 on the opening of the exhibition "Tibet. Buddhas, gods, saints."
