Museum and gallery Breclav
Breclav, Czechia
The Municipal Museum and Gallery in Břeclav (hereafter referred to as MMG Břeclav) was founded as a contribution organization of the city of Břeclav in April 1995. However, the actual beginnings of the museum industry date back to 1928, when the Museum and National History Society was founded on the initiative of representatives of Czech national life in Břeclav. This was a continuation of the activities of the city council, supporting the collection of collection items and archival materials, related not only to the city itself, but also to the surrounding municipalities. The first general meeting of the museum association took place on October 16 of the same year, and Ing. Jan Noháč, then vice-chairman Ing. Rudolph Zaoral. The enthusiastic and well-founded work of the members of the association was forcibly interrupted in 1938. After the occupation of the city by the German army, the functionaries and members of the association were dispersed and the collections were left without any responsible administrator at the office, some of them were taken home by the members. Renewed efforts to re-establish a museum in Břeclav were manifested after the end of the Second World War.
From January 1, 1948, it became a member of the Association of Czechoslovak Museums under the name of the Municipal Museum in Břeclav. Unfortunately, after 1961, there were significant changes in the field of museology. The museum in Břeclav first became a link in the network of district museums and followed the plan for the development of museum work drawn up by the Museum of Folklore in Mikulov, but eventually it had to disappear completely. museum works and put them on a solid foundation by building a professional facility. The concrete fulfillment of the efforts of several generations of national history workers took place at the beginning of 1995.
On January 17, the city of Břeclav issued the founding document of the contribution organization "Městské muzeum a galerie Břeclav", which has actually existed since April 1 of the same year, when it gradually began to fulfill the basic museum functions of collection, thesaurus and presentation, with a focus on archaeology, history and ethnography.
Until 2007, the museum's main building was located in the premises of a former Jewish school, built in the late 1880s. Since 2012, this object has been returned to the administration of MMG Břeclav, but now under the name Liechtenstein House. The Břeclav Tourist Information Center and a wine shop are located on the ground floor, and the History of the Lichtenstein Family permanent exhibition is located on the first and second floors. In the attic there is a Gallery in the attic.
