Montcalm East, Autograph Collection, is a new breed of hotel, with a mission to support its vibrant
neighbourhood of East London by providing a creative hub for guests and visitors alike. The interior
design takes inspiration from the artistic heritage of the area with a particular focus on photography.
In a unique collaboration with Ravensbourne University, the hotel hosts a photographer in residence
programme in their state of the art Photo Studio. Emerging artists can make full use of the permanent
studio space to develop their portfolio and showcase their work while hotel guests are encouraged to
drop by for expert advice and create content of their own with on-site smartphone printers or the hotel’s
exciting partnership with Polaroid. The hotel has worked with art consultant Anne Trouillet Rogers at
Culture A to create an art experience that celebrates London-made artworks throughout the hotel
including each of the 288 guestrooms. The interiors have been meticulously thought out by
Shoreditch-based studio Blacksheep who have created a community space in the areas of the hotel with
clever nods to the theme of photography including optical lighting, projections and RGB colours.

Taking pride in its artistic surroundings, Montcalm East’s art collection has been carefully curated by
Culture A. Art consultant Anne Trouillet Rogers has selected artists and makers whose work pays homage
to the city through a variety of mediums. Particular highlights include a street-art-inspired textile by
London-based print artist Lisa King and a large-scale, hand-painted illustrative mural by Hackney-resident, Carlos Penalver, plus works by Acrylicize, Other Fabrications, and photographers Nico Froehlich, Sabela Peinado, Brunel Johnson, and Louise Lilburn. As an added touch, QR code art labels welcome guests to scan and learn more about individual artworks transforming the hotel’s reading room and mezzanine lounge into an exhibition space for both permanent and rotating collections. The team has commissioned a dynamic selection of local artists as well as worked with critically acclaimed Pop Art specialists Proud Galleries to showcase a series of portraits capturing iconic people, moments and trends defining the culture of the area.
The cultural safari continues with a collection of books provided by Hoxton Mini Press that fill the hotel
library and a partnership with magazine fanatics MagCulture that deliver a range of rare fashion, art and
photography titles direct to room.
Outside, the hotel’s striking exterior pays tribute to the op art of Tate Modern luminary, Bridget Riley.
The diamond-shaped building is a nod to the artist’s 1980s geometric optical art with its shimmering
grey façade that tricks the eye.

Montcalm East has 288 guestrooms, split across eight categories. All are bathed in natural light, thanks to
the building’s distinctive diagonal windows while the ‘Sky-High’ rooms boast floor-to-ceiling windows
that offer unique views over the city and one of the best views in London.
