New York, United States
The Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is the first dedicated LGBTQ art museum in the world with a mission to exhibit and preserve LGBTQ art, and foster the artists who create it The Leslie-Lohman Museum embraces the rich creative history of the LGBTQ art community by educating, informing, inspiring, entertaining, and challenging all who enter its doors.
The Museum is operated by the Leslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation, Inc., a non-profit founded in 1987 by Charles W. Leslie and Fritz Lohman who have supported LGBTQ artists for over 30 years. The Leslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit organization and is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)3 of the IRS Code.
In the Main Gallery, the calendar of events includes 6-8 major exhibitions a year, film screenings, plays, poetry readings, artist and curator talks, and panel discussions. Other galleries include the Wooster St. Window Gallery, on view to the public twenty-four hours a day from street level and speaks to the LGBTQ experience showing art from both emerging and established artists that might be denied access to mainstream venues due to subject matter or institutional bias; and the Prince St. Project Space, curated under Charles Leslie’s trained eye, this space hosts the weekly Leslie-Lohman Studio and offers weekend exhibitions and events.
The Museum maintains a collection of over 24,000 works, and retains an artist archive that contains information on over 1,900 LGBTQ artists, both those represented in the collection and others of interest to LGBTQ audiences.
Also, it houses a library of over 1,600 volumes that is one the most comprehensive collection of published books, catalogues, and pamphlets on LGBTQ art and also publishes The ARCHIVE, a quarterly journal about LGBTQ art and artists.
The Museum has an online DATABASE that allows you to search images from the Museum's Permanent Collection. Also included on the website is a valuable teaching tool called MILESTONES, a timetable of the history of art from the gay perspective.
The Museum is located at 26 Wooster Street, in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. Admission is always free, and hours are 12pm-6pm Tuesday through Sunday, 12-8 pm on Thursday. The Museum is closed Monday and all major holidays. The Museum can be reached at 212-431-2609.
