UNFURLED: Unsettling the Archive From a More-Than-Human Perspective

An extension of Jill Price's previous research into the ecological, social and psychological shadows of today’s global textile industry, Unfurled is a an exhibition that playfully speculates on how animals might choose to engage with, frame, label and question the colonial histories of the North American Fur Trade and material objects held within the archives of Canada's museums.

Drawing out narratives based on animals hunted, trapped and exchanged as part of early economic imperialism, the installation utilizes objects and materials held within OMAH’s historical collection, the larger archive of consumerist culture, and word play, to allude to how the mass killing of animals led to the material wealth of their prime predators, early French and British traders and colonial settlers.

Currently installed at the Orillia Museum of Art and History due to the importance of the Atherley Narrows, a site that became a key site of cultural and capital exchange, and led to the eventual formation of Orillia as a European settlement in 1840, Price has turned the gallery into a living space reminiscent of a late 19th century parlour to allude to how interior and exterior environments are materially and psychically linked.

Disclaimer: No animals were hurt or killed during the production of this exhibition.

Until the exhibition opens up to the public, feel free to view Price's video Unleashed. A performative video recording of her releasing the fur of a rabbit from the shape of a human hat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjjFHYr8za8

Jill Price is an artist, curator, and educator of German and Welsh descent currently residing on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. Currently researching "unmaking" as a creative act, Price explores new materialism and more-than-human ontologies to investigate how artists might help to dismantle colonial, capitalist, and patriarchal approaches to the land. Jill Price has previously exhibited at OMAH in our Annual Women’s Day Art Show and Waterline/Timeline. Unfurled marks Price’s first solo exhibition with OMAH.

THANK-YOU TO THE PAUL QUARRINGTON LEGACY FUND FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THIS EXHIBITION.
