Hangar Photo Art Center

Hangar is an art center devoted to photography, Hangar has set itself the mission of opening up to all forms and sensitivities of contemporary photography. There is no restriction on genres, or territories, or operating methods in the medium. What counts is the artist, what he or she has to say about his or her times through the lens, and the experience that the curated and exhibited works offer our visitors.

With its annual event PhotoBrussels Festival, Hangar has seen the gradual emergence of a whole dynamic based around photography.

• Young and upcoming photographers

As it has done over the last two years, Hangar is again supporting up and coming photographers via partnerships with art and photography colleges schools, giving particular attention and support to young talents and organising competitions such as the PBF Prize at the during PhotoBrussels Festival.

• Activities around Hangar

The pace of 8 to 10 exhibitions a year is being maintained, and will enable visitors to be exposed to a broad selection of photographic artists. The watchword is mediation and openness to all audiences, with a schedule of lectures, workshops and various events based around photography. The sales arm (selling prints, photography books, limited editions and so on) is housed in a bookshop and a new venture, the Photo Art Center gallery (PAC gallery).

• …at the beginning

Between 1899 and 1902, the building was then a Belgian automobile construction company, directed by the brothers Victor and Alfred Goldschmidt. The factory called the "pipe" built sports cars. In the 1980s, the large space was laid out over three floors and became a nightclub, a very popular disco: the “Sinergon”. It was not until about 30 years later that Rodolphe de Spoelberch acquired the building, which had been renovated in the meantime. After a series of changes, he wanted to dedicate the place to art exhibitions. In 2014, Rodolphe de Spoelberch founded Hangar, a private Belgian art center, later calling upon Delphine Dumont (founder of PhotoBrussels Festival) to be its director (in July 2017).

• A 1000 m2 space

It offers over 1,000 m2 of floor space, featuring two exhibition areas (main space and front space), a bookshop devoted to photography, and the Campo restaurant, which stands alongside Hangar.
Main space / 1000m2 spread out over 3 floors. Museum exhibitions, groups shows, thematic exhibitions, 3 to 5 times a year.
Front space / 45m2 at the street front. Discover there, young artists, gallery exhibitions or private collections. The exhibitions turnover is faster, with an average of 1 show a month.
