Haarlem Artspace is located in Haarlem Mill, which was constructed in 1777 by Richard Arkwright producing the ubiquitous red tape used for legal documents. It is considered to be the first coal-powered mill. Haarlem Mill in turn lies on the outskirts of the historic market town of Wirksworth, Thought to be the Roman Town of Lutudarum, Wirksworth was already well known around the world as a thriving lead mining centre and later a key quarrying town.

Haarlem Artspace is dedicated to showcasing contemporary artistic practice that responds to our surrounding areas unique environment and location; its historical role in global industrialisation and our relationship and impact on the natural environment.
