Extra City Kunsthal is a place for the production, presentation and debate of artistic practices. Extra City’s exhibition program focuses on contemporary artistic developments from Belgium and abroad, including historical positions that are of relevance for today’s discourses. Extra City seeks to address engaged audiences by offering a challenging program of exhibitions and related events, such as debates, talks, guest presentations, performances and screenings. It collaborates with local partners as well as with international institutions, museums and universities, in the development and dissemination of its programs, and provides external initiatives with a platform for the advancement of exemplary projects.

Extra City Kunsthal was founded in 2004 by Wim Peeters, and initially located in a grain silo in the Antwerp harbour area. In 2006, Anselm Franke was appointed artistic director and the institution moved to a former industrial space in Antwerp North. Since 2011, Mihnea Mircan serves as Extra City’s artistic director. The Kunsthal inaugurated in September 2013 its new venue in Antwerpen-Berchem. A former industrial launderette, the building accommodates a wider range of functions, such as artist studios, a bar and a cinema space, and hosts the offices of organizations such as 0090, Gagarin, Lokaal 01, OCAM and Kunstwerk, as well as events proposed by these partners.
