OAM-KLEINE BERLINER KUNSTVERSCHWÖRUNG Nr.1
03 Oct 2020 – 29 Oct 2020
Donnerstag Gallery opens its doors with a solo show featuring Canadian artist Valerie Potvin : DISSOLUTION.
The exhibition is divided into a material and a digital world. The first part presents a monumental sculptural installation of a headless, fragmented and disjointed skeleton and the second part shows a video projection of experiments made with sculptures decomposing under water.
In her present work, the artist is inspired by natural history, archeological excavations and underwater explorations. The symbols she uses, such as death and sex, recall themes anchored in the present: sexual violence, power relations, climate change, loss of biodiversity and threat of extinction. The current exhibition is charged with this awareness, it's meaning is underscored with the advent of the Metoo movement as well as the current pandemic.
Potvin's work is currently associated with ecofeminism, plays with scales and creates unlikely bodies whose realism is established with evocation of contemporary social, economical and political issues.
Valérie Potvin lives and work in Quebec City in Canada. She holds a Master of Arts from Laval University and leads a professional career in Canada and abroad; her works have been shown in Brazil, in the United states and in Europe. She recently completed an artist residency at the ZK/U in Berlin, where she realized this work, funded by Canada Council for the Arts as part of the Frankfurt 2020 special initiative: Canada as guest of honour in Germany.
