Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is the house of the artists and shows exhibitions that are produced, initiated or chosen by artists. Den Frie is especially focused on contemporary artistic communities, collective exhibitions, artists associations and experimental groups and networks.

The house is built by artists for artists and today strives to make an interesting and varied exhibition programme, that challenges the exceptional architecture of the building. 8 exhibitions are shown each year, most of them group exhibitions. Apart from those, soloexhibitions with either younger, promising artists or artists, that have made important contributions to art history are presented.

The Danish foundation A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal has granted a generous donation for securing the future of Den Frie. In the period 2012-2014 the house will be brought back to the vision that J. F. Willumsen had for it and at the same time will undergo an expansion. This includes the removal of the extension of the house from 1954 and establishing a new floor below the existing building with a large, new exhibition room, archive and storage room, education room and meeting room. In addition there will be new audience facilities including a café with access to a newly established garden by the acknowledged landscape architect Günther Vogt.
