Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) is an independent institution established in 2015 which works to create an international center for contemporary art and cultural experiences in Copenhagen.

CC has been given the opportunity to rent 3,400 m2 of the former paper halls on Papirøen (Paper Island) in the Copenhagen Inner Harbour beside the Opera and opposite the Playhouse and Nyhavn. From 30 June 2016 until the end of 2017 the halls will be transformed into a place for changing exhibitions with artists who have aroused great attention internationally. In collaboration with external actors including Copenhagen Street Food and Copenhagen Art Week, CC will endeavour for eighteen months, with an evening wine bar, design shop, events and exhibitions of contemporary art, indoors as well as outdoors in Papirøen’s harbour area, to create an open, relaxed meeting place for people of all ages.

With contemporary art a need has arisen for exhibition spaces that also have room to show the technically demanding and space-requiring formats: large art installations of light, sound and motion, sculptural landscapes, performance and monumental video art on many screens. Over the past few decades art institutions for the new art have opened in the cities of the world; institutions like the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, BALTIC Art Center in Newcastle, Tate Modern in London, Hangar Biccoca in Milan and MoMA PS1 in New York, which CC draws the inspiration from. CC’s goal is to create such an up-to-date international center for the great art of the 21st century in the Danish capital.
