Borstal exists as an artist run organisation that focuses on the exhibition of independent professional artists with a programme of related events, including discussions, film screenings and public projects. Founded in February 2009, Borstal, run by three Central Saint Martins BA (Hons) Fine Art Students; Charlie Drinkwater, Alexander Ingham Brooke and Jammie Nicholas, is dedicated to increasing the access and community surrounding the visual arts.
Borstal commissions artists to produce new work in response to our unique space, a 120 square foot converted shipping container, and in response to continual dialogue between artist and curators. The work is installed in curatorial collaboration with the artist and Borstal, building a strong relationship between the organisation and artist. This exchange allows for an unrestricted process of collaborative creation resulting in a unique outcome open to the public.
