Culture is in a state of flux. Boundaries are dissolving, new technologies emerging, and screens and cameras of all sizes proliferating. Artists are filmmakers. Strike that, everyone is a filmmaker. And filmmakers (as we have always known) are artists. Last March, the BFI opened its new Gallery at the Southbank, making this topsy turvy world a little topsy turvier. The Gallery is London's only major venue specifically dedicated to artists' exploration and use of the moving image. This contemporary art space will host five exhibitions each year, exploring the blue sky between the black box of the cinema auditorium and the white cube of the art museum.
