Bargain Spot
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Bargain Spot is an artist-led project space within a refurbished commercial property directed by ECA graduates Lydia Honeybone and Abigail Webster. The site hosts exhibitions, residencies, performances, events, and affordable artists studios, extending opportunities to emerging artists and curators. Operating since April 2015, the space has supported over ten temporary exhibi- tions and has successfully established a post-graduate community in dialogue with both Edin- burgh College of Art and the local community around the city centre location of Tollcross. Bargain Spot aims to deliver a diverse, inventive programme, asserting the agency of early ca- reer practitioners in defining the art world. It was initiated as a space for showing, experimenting, discussing and thinking about contemporary art practice in the city, with the core aim of creating a vibrant and more buoyant community for young artists living in Edinburgh and beyond. It is intended as an open and engaged space for community participation, allowing a wider public to encounter contemporary art through the visibility of its central location. Bargain Spot is exploring alternative approaches to fundraising and operates on a reciprocal working methodology where- by opportunities to exhibit are offered in exchange for dedicating some time towards improving the space.
