MISSION
Art in General is a nonprofit organization that assists artists with the production and presentation of new work. It changes in response to the needs of artists and informs and engages the public about their work.

ABOUT ART IN GENERAL
For more than 30 years, Art in General has provided two of the scarcest resources to artists – space and funding. In a city teeming with creativity, we help local and international artists produce major groundbreaking projects that would otherwise not be realized.

Art in General was founded in 1981 by two young artists, Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka, in the General Hardware building (where it remains today) as a space for artists to inspire, meet, and exhibit. A pioneering force since the 1980’s, we have grown into a New York institution unlike any other in the city, supporting thousands of local and international artists through deep personal connections and direct funding.

We have a long history of supporting artists early in their careers. From Glenn Ligon in 1991, Marina Abramović in 1993, and Gabriel Orozco in 1994, we are often in the forefront of giving artists their first New York exhibitions. Most recently our New Commissions artists have gone on to be included in the Whitney Biennial, documenta, the Venice Biennale, as well as in exhibitions at major institutions here and abroad, from MoMA to the Tate Modern.

Our impact is felt both in New York and around the world. In this last year, we were invited to guest curate the hundredth anniversary OPEN FORUM talks at The Armory Show, co-curate the Latvian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale, and received the highest level of press in our history with reviews by The New York Times, Artforum, Modern Painters, Art in America, and more. Art in General has two main gallery spaces, one on the sixth floor, and another in a street-level storefront known as the Project Space. The exhibition program focuses primarily on presenting artists’ work created through the New Commissions and Artist Residency Programs. When the commissioned artworks and projects are event-based, ephemeral or non-objects, special formats or programming are designed for the public to experience the work. The Musée Miniscule is also located on the sixth floor.

ABOUT ART IN GENERAL’S NEW COMMISSIONS PROGRAM
Since its launch in 2005, the New Commissions Program has formed the core of Art in General’s programming, and was designed in direct response to feedback from artists who expressed a need for more in-depth support for the production of new work. Art in General gives selected artists the opportunity to create and present new work by providing them with a high level of organizational and conceptual support including artist fees, production fees, exhibition space, a solo exhibition, promotion, and opportunities to engage with audiences through free online and public programs.

FACILITIES
Housed in a six-floor building that is located at the intersection of three neighborhoods in New York City (Tribeca, SoHo, and Chinatown), Art in General has a gallery space dedicated to rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. The gallery is located in the building’s 6th floor, and is approximately 2,000 square feet. The gallery underwent a major renovation by Steven Learner Studios beginning in 2006 and was re-opened in January 2007 with a more open and spacious exhibition area.

Art in General’s second gallery is a storefront space located at street-level. It was donated by Gerry Weinstein, CEO of General Tools, in the fall of 2003. This storefront gallery is approximately 600 square feet. The building’s 4th floor houses Art in General’s office area. General Tools, Inc. occupies the rest of the building.
