Rochele Gomez: It's Just Not the Same Without You at As-Is Gallery

06 May 2025

by Jody Zellen

Bittersweet humour meets memory and place in this photographic series exploring personal history, displacement, and emotional ephemera in the everyday corners of Los Angeles.

A lot can be said — and inferred — across five images. The photographs that make up Rochele Gomez’s exhibition It's Just Not the Same Without You are modestly sized, backlit light boxes depicting dwellings around Los Angeles where the artist once lived. While each image shows a place, the focal point is a large hand-painted greeting card featuring the cartoon character Garfield, complete with a thought bubble and/or a quasi-philosophical, self-help-style message. Catch it before it closes on 10 May.
