Kyungmi Shin’s “Origin Stories” exhibition merges ceramics, sculpture, and painted photographs to explore female and Asian identity, blending historical and contemporary influences through personal and traditional art forms.

In Kyungmi Shin’s exhibition, “Origin Stories,” the Korean-born, Los Angeles-based artist explores the past and present through a thoughtful intermingling of ceramics, sculpture, and painted photographs. Her complex works explore female and Asian identities and ancestry through art historical representations, while also referencing contemporary culture. Shin mines personal photographic archives, enlarging snapshots and tracing aspects of them with gold and silver lines. She further explores traditional Asian patterning, often presenting her original ceramic objects alongside authentic traditional pieces. This blurring of distinctions between the two types of objects challenges the notions of what is contemporary and what is traditional. Closes September 9th—last chance to catch at Craft Contemporary.
