Welcome to the post-summer glow of September, my personal favourite month and a pivotal time for sculpture and public art in London. This month, the city transforms into a vibrant gallery under the open sky, notably through major initiatives—Frieze Sculpture, the Fourth Plinth, Sculpture in the City, and The Line—banding together under the banner of London Sculpture Week. Running from 21 to 29 September, the week will see the city celebrate its cultural landscape with stunning outdoor sculptures, featuring public art tours, family-friendly workshops, and live performances by artists.

Complementing this, this autumn also brings a wealth of new sculptures and installations across London. With temperatures perfect for leisurely city walks, be sure to visit Yayoi Kusama’s Infinite Accumulation, unveiled this summer as her first permanent public artwork in the UK and the final piece commissioned by the Crossrail Art Programme for the Elizabeth line, the largest collaborative public art commissioning process in a generation.

Next week, you can view Bharti Kher’s supersized bindis at the Hayward Gallery façade. Then, starting 18 September, the return of Frieze Sculpture at Regent’s Park, perfectly aligning with Frieze London, remains a staple of our autumn outings.

Later this autumn, Mire Lee’s installation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall opens, promising a showcase of her visceral sculptures that incorporate kinetic, mechanised elements. Most pieces are outdoors and free to access, providing an excellent opportunity to enjoy the city’s public art in the mild weather.
